The Fraser Institute scores and ranks schools in Ontario every year, and many families tend to base their choices on these scores and rankings.
According to the Fraser Institute, “rankings use objective, publicly-available data such as average scores on province-wide tests.”
However, scoring and ranking schools merely based on the average student performance on standardized tests, such as EQAO, is an oversimplification.
In fact, the scoring and ranking system fails to account for the following factors:
- Students’ overall satisfaction and happiness
- Staff job satisfaction
- Extracurriculars
- Average school marks
- University admission rates
- Student complaint rate
- School hygiene and safety
Therefore, families are recommended to use the Fraser Institute’s school ranking as one of the many factors in their decision-making and not the only factor.
