Renting a Car: Do I Need to Purchase the Collision Damage Waiver?

Before purchasing the collision damage waiver, check with your credit card company. Most credit card plans offer free collision damage insurance. Just make sure you use your credit card to pay for the rental car that your rent under your name. Also, check with your credit card company the number of days your plan covers your rental car. If you are put in a rental by your car dealership, unfortunately, you may not be able to use your credit card to pay, in which case your credit card company will not be covering your rental car.

Please note that the collision damage waiver is different from third-party liability insurance. In Ontario, all rental cars are required to have a minimum of $200.000 liability insurance.
